The science behind IR Sauna.
Infrared Sauna’s are becoming more and more popular, gaining wider recognition with more and more people using them for their incredible health benefits!
Find out below why it is an amazing addition to your Wellness Routine.
Let's delve into what we know about it’s history
( just briefly):
In the late 1800s, Sir William Herschel discovered infrared radiation, a type of heat invisible to the naked eye.
In 1891, John Harvey Kellogg transformed saunas by using incandescent light bulbs to produce infrared heat.
In the 1960s, Dr. Tadashi Ishikawa patented a far infrared heater known for its deep-penetrating therapeutic benefits.
In the 1970s, NASA's research on infrared technology enhanced sauna heating elements, energy efficiency, and safety features, making infrared saunas more accessible.

Unlike traditional saunas, which heat the air and can be stuffy, infrared saunas use infrared light to directly heat the body, providing a deeper muscle relaxation and internal warmth.
Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures (45-65°C) compared to traditional saunas (80-100°C), thanks to their electromagnetic radiation's skin-penetrating ability. This means you can sit comfortably for a longer period of time to enjoy ‘Healing with Heat’.
The Mitochondria, (cell organelles) which is crucial for cellular respiration and energy production, directly absorb near-infrared heat, this in turn boosts their ATP production. Consequently, this provides more energy to the body's respiring tissues.
(This is just a fraction of the dozens of mechanism at the biochemical and cellular level.)
Sam and Diana have compiled an extremely useful list pertaining to studies and scientifically proven research. It comes highly recommended for those who are deeply interested in understanding how this therapy affects us and benefits us.
Additionally, you can join us at Mederi to experience for yourself how great you feel during and after a sauna session. Clients report feeling more flexible and energised, skin health has visibly improved and tension has just melted away.
“Weightlifting is a big part of my life and I do feel that it stops the DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) when the sauna becomes so hot I have to concentrate on my breathing and its like a way for me to meditate, I really enjoyed the silence”
